November 22nd, 2009

Tourism industry representatives and guests from around the state gathered last night at the Burswood Entertainment Complex Grand Ballroom for the prestigious Western Australian Tourism Awards the State’s highest honours in tourism excellence.  For the second year running Windward were announced winners of the Adventure Tourism category.

The Gala Dinner, attended by over 820 guests, saw the coming together of the top tourism businesses throughout Western Australia.
The evening, hosted by Channel 10’s Narelda Jacobs and 94.5fm’s Dean Clairs, featured a spectacular Under the Sea theme complemented by dazzling entertainment.

This year’s Awards drew over 50 new entrants from a wide range of tourism businesses, from all parts of Western Australia which is an indication of the strength of the tourism industry in these difficult economic times said Graham Moss, CEO of Tourism Council WA and Chair of Judges for the Awards.  The quality of the submissions was outstanding and a testimony to the calibre of tourism facilities, services and operations in Western Australia.

The hotly contested Adventure Tourism category featured nine finalists with Windward first, Three Islands Marine Charters Whale Shark Tours second and Ngilgi Cave Adventure Tours third.

Windward will now go on to participate in the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, with the winners to be announced in Hobart in February 2010.

Receiving the award on behalf of Windward was our Customer Services Manager - Heather Meiklem who made the following speech:

“It is a great honour to accept this award on behalf of the team at Windward. Unfortunately our Director and Chief Pilot Damien Hays along with our operational support staff are all in their homes tucked up in bed and could not be with us tonight as they all have to be up at 3am for our final flight of the 2009 season tomorrow morning.
I know Damien would want to thank all of his staff for their support in helping us achieve this award for the second year running.  Their passion about our product is a testament to our success.  In accepting this award I would like to acknowledge the support of the Avon Valley community as well as the landowners whom we couldn’t operate without their assistance.
